unbearable lightness is the answer
Is love heavy or light?
In the burden of all responsibilities, I honestly prefer to be light. I think this is why I really like the book, Unbearable Lightness of Being, because Tomas and Sabina, two of the many protagonists, are representations to why, in romance, preferring lightness favors nobody. It is easy to see why since Tomas and Sabina are non-committal by behavior i.e Tomas commits infidelity or Sabina is repulsive, this only inflicts suffering to the other party and themselves. The price of constant betrayal to whatever weighs us down is a hollow emptiness in our hearts or an unbearable lightness in our being (grin).
However the book is also fair in arguing that heaviness is not always better than lightness. Just as fleeing from love is bad, over attachment can stupefy us from making sensible choices. This is why (I think) Tereza, despite all the betrayals that Tomas has committed, she chooses to remain in confiding with her meaning of love which bears weight even if it meant unfaithfulness along the way. If Tereza’s lack of sensibility in making her choice is a weakness of the book, I argue it adds strength to what the book wants to portray: heaviness isn’t much better than lightness just as lightness isn’t as better as heaviness.
Thus just as love is harmony between two souls, the book's wisdom is finding that balance, that paradoxical harmony of phrase, unbearable lightness. In the fervor of lightness which only leads us to irresponsibility, we must place weight to ourselves to keep us grounded. We are not omniscient; our judgement may not always be correct. We may regret making foolish, dumb decisions (‘What would’ve happened had I chosen to commit?’) because we over-rely our senses, that natural inclination towards lightness or heaviness. Striking a balance, I imagine, is akin to holding a balloon, so light and so fun, and If we simply let go of our grip to the infinite skies, that joy and satisfaction that comes from holding that balloon will any longer dissipate.
Too much lightness is unbearable, so too much heaviness is unbearable, why not then we add meaning by weighing it just enough to keep us remain light.
