catching up with a friend
Let's call him D. After a series of postponing and forgetting to call each other, we finally did the promised voice call. We haven't met each other for 4 months now so I expected it to be awkward at first. Those worries would soon disappear 5 minutes through the call. Just listening to him, I could imagine us talking together in the student lounge just like how it used to be. There are few things I find worth highlighting from the call:
- the unglamorous uni life
It was simply a mere remark by D but I can't help but find it so real.
'I see people on social media posting their uni life and I look at mine, it sucks'
I have nothing to add on but sympathize with him. Fortunately, I'm not on Instagram anymore so I have no idea how my friends are doing with their lives.
- "was it that tough?"
D compared the level of coursework with high school and university. He commented that university is way lighter compared to high school. For context, we had 6+ subjects in high school while he has 4 courses in uni. It felt so light to the point he wasn't sure if he was doing uni right.
Back to my main point, it did not occur to me that high school was supposed to be that stressful (This deserves a separate post). I can't help but think 'was it that tough?'.
- towards a lasting friendship?
Near the end of our conversation, we talked about when we are planning to return home. Each of us gave our dates. I asked him, 'what should we do when we meet up?'
'Not sure... We used to always just be able to meet up in school but now that we don't, idk..' he replies.
A moment of silence.
'Oh we can play billiard with X', he says.
I said sure. We both admitted we don't exactly know how to but we can always wing it.
Now, I have exactly no idea how a close friendship should be. We don't exactly share a lot of common interest although at the least we can still talk about anime and a bit of Minecraft I guess but that's as far it can get. It sucks that I don't play videogames which he does a lot so we don't really connect on that manner. There is no pressure but I guess it would be nice to build a lasting friendship?
